When your parents live alone, home insurance stops being a household formality and becomes a way of knowing that, if something goes wrong, they are not on their own. You do not need to understand the small print of a policy: you need to know what to look for.

When your parents live alone, what changes at home?

A water leak, a lock that will not open or a short circuit are minor setbacks for someone who is at home and lives nearby. For elderly parents living alone, and for a son or daughter who is miles away, they weigh far more: who goes round, who do they call, how long will it take? That is why, rather than hunting for the most complete policy on paper, it pays to look at what happens the day something fails: who responds, with what priority and in what manner.

From age 60, home insurance automatically becomes Home Senior: the same protection as always, with priority attention when an incident arises and a social guidance service. It is also the policy many children take out for their parents.

In one sentence: for parents who live alone, what matters is not only what the policy covers, but who responds and with what priority when something goes wrong.

  • ✓Who responds when there is an emergency at home.
  • ✓With what priority the incident is handled.
  • ✓Who the point of contact is for the whole family.

The usual protection that must not be missing

Before the added services, the foundation has to be a good home insurance policy. Home Senior includes fire, explosion and lightning; water damage with leak location; theft inside the home, storage room and garage, and breakages. It also includes civil liability, with legal defence, in case your parents cause damage to a third party.

And 24-hour assistance: emergency plumbing, locksmith, glazing and electrical work, with priority handling of incidents, plus a handyman service for small repairs. The conditions and limits of each cover are set out in the policy, so I explain them in writing together with the proposal.

If the home is also left empty for periods, here I explain what happens when a property stands empty

  • ✓Full protection of the home: fire, water, theft and breakages.
  • ✓Civil liability with legal defence.
  • ✓24-hour assistance with priority handling of incidents.

Priority attention and social guidance: what they are and what they are not

Priority attention means incidents receive preferential handling, so that those who need it most do not have to wait. It is the way the call is managed, not a promise of a specific timeframe.

Social guidance is a phone service that informs and supports you about telecare, home help, day centres, care homes, dependency and technical aids. It is included in Home Senior, with no extra cost for using it. It is worth being clear about what it is not: an information and possible referral service to public services; it is not health insurance, it does not replace medical care and it is not a complete legal or administrative service.

An example: telecare lets you call for help at the press of a button, usually a device or pendant, in the event of a fall or emergency at home. Through social guidance they tell you how it works and how to request it. The insurance itself does not fund home adaptation work, but it does point you towards technical aids and available resources.

  • ✓Priority attention on home incidents.
  • ✓Social guidance included, at no extra cost.
  • ✓Information, not health insurance or a complete procedure.

Managing it yourself even if you do not live with them

It is very common for a son, daughter or relative to take out and manage the policy. I handle the process with you, with minimal paperwork: your parents have one point of contact — me — and priority attention if a breakdown or emergency comes up, without you needing to be physically present.

It can be taken out for any family member over 60 (an uncle, a grandparent) or for yourself if you reach that age. And there is no age limit that forces you to give it up.

  • ✓1. You tell me the case by phone, WhatsApp or form.
  • ✓2. I prepare a tailored proposal and explain it clearly.
  • ✓3. We activate it, and your parents have a point of contact.

If your parents already have home insurance

There is no need to start from scratch or cancel anything blindly. We can review their current policy together with Home Senior and manage the switch at the right time, usually at renewal, so they are never left without cover for a single day.

The rule is the usual one: the current policy is not cancelled until the conditions of the new one, and the date from which it covers, are confirmed in writing.

  • ✓Review the current policy before deciding.
  • ✓Switch at the right time, usually at renewal.
  • ✓Confirm in writing before cancelling anything.
