Frequently asked questions

Before you write to me.

The questions I get asked most. If yours isn’t here, write to me and I’ll answer personally.

I’m asked for liability insurance to work, can you sort it for me?
Yes, with a valid certificate; we size it to your activity.
What exactly does it cover?
Damage you unintentionally cause to third parties in your activity: compensation, legal defence and bonds.
Can it go inside my premises insurance?
Yes, integrated into the Empresas Comercio multi-risk policy, or as a separate policy. See Empresas Comercio
Which modality do I need?
It depends on your activity (operations, employer’s, premises, products…). I guide you based on your case.
Does it cover fines?
No: fines and penalties are excluded. It covers liability to third parties.
Does it cover my employees?
Employer’s liability covers claims for damage to workers; it’s taken out as a modality. We look at it based on your team.
How long does it take to issue the liability certificate?
Once the policy is taken out, the certificate is usually available within a few days; I’ll get it to you as soon as possible if you need it for a contract, licence or client.
What happens if a client makes a claim against me for damage I think is unfair?
The policy includes legal defence against the claim, including an unfounded one, with lawyers and court representatives defending your position.
Does liability insurance cover damage to my own tools or property?
No, liability insurance covers damage you cause to third parties; your own property (tools, stock, premises) needs different cover, such as a multi-risk policy.
What’s the difference between operations liability and product liability?
Operations liability covers damage arising from your day-to-day activity; product liability covers damage caused by what you manufacture, sell or supply once it’s left your hands.
Do I need liability insurance if I work alone from home as self-employed?
It depends on your activity: if your work could cause damage to third parties (client visits, services provided elsewhere, products delivered), it’s worth having it even without premises.
What happens if I’m asked for a specific cover limit for a contract?
We adjust your policy’s indemnity limit to the amount required in the contract, licence or tender asking for it, so you can present the certificate without any issues.
Does it cover claims from years before the policy was taken out?
Generally not: it covers damage caused during the policy’s period in force, unless there are specific retroactive cover clauses agreed in the particular conditions.
Can I have liability insurance without the premises’ multi-risk policy?
Yes, you can take out RC General as a standalone policy without needing the Empresas Comercio multi-risk policy; many self-employed people and professionals do it this way.
What happens if I change professional activity?
It’s worth letting me know so I can update the modality and scope of your liability cover, since the cover is adjusted to the declared type of activity.
Does it cover damage caused by a subcontractor working for me?
It can be covered depending on the modality taken out and how the relationship with subcontractors is declared; I’ll confirm the exact scope by reviewing your activity.
What happens if I’m sued and the claim turns out to be unfounded?
The legal defence included in the policy still represents you against unfounded claims, covering the cost of lawyers and court representatives.
Do I need liability insurance to take part in a public tender?
Many public tenders require valid liability cover with a minimum limit; I’ll prepare the policy and certificate tailored to what the tender documents ask for.
What happens if I have temporary or seasonal employees?
Employer’s liability, taken out as a modality, covers claims for damage to workers, whether permanent or temporary; we’ll review it based on your team.
Can I increase the indemnity limit if a client requires it?
Yes, the cover limit can be reviewed and increased whenever you need to, for example if a new contract requires a higher amount than you currently have.
